UGC-NET Re-Exam Ordered for Three Papers After Multiple Errors in Question Papers

Report by swati

New Delhi | August 17, 2026

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has ordered a fresh examination for three UGC-NET subjects—English, Commerce and Sociology—after an expert committee identified multiple errors in the question papers conducted during the June 2026 examination .The decision follows several complaints from candidates regarding deficiencies in the affected papers. According to reports, the committee examined the complaints and identified factual inaccuracies, language-related errors, translation problems and other flaws, making a simple correction through the answer-key process inadequate. The re-examination for the three subjects has been scheduled for September 9 and 10, 2026. Candidates appearing for the affected subjects will not be required to pay an additional examination fee. The controversy has once again placed the NTA under scrutiny over the quality-control mechanisms used in preparing and vetting national-level examination papers. UGC-NET is conducted to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship, Assistant Professor positions and admission to PhD programmes. The latest development is particularly significant for candidates who had already appeared for the examination and invested substantial time and resources in preparation. The re-test will require them to return to the examination process amid an already competitive academic environment. The NTA’s decision is being viewed as a corrective measure intended to safeguard fairness, examination integrity and equal opportunity for candidates. The remaining UGC-NET subjects are not affected by this re-examination decision. The episode has also renewed calls for stronger editorial scrutiny, expert verification, translation checks and factual validation before question papers are finalised for high-stakes national examinations.
