Indonesia Rocked by Three Major Earthquakes in 24 Hours; 7.7-Magnitude Flores Quake Kills at Least 47

Report by Swati

August 15, 2026 — 5:58 AM local time onwards

Jakarta/Flores: Indonesia was rocked by three major earthquakes within a 24-hour period, with a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake striking off the coast of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday, leaving at least 47 people dead and triggering tsunami warnings. The strongest seismic event struck at approximately 5:58 a.m. local time near Ende. The shallow earthquake, occurring at a depth of around 10 kilometres, generated intense ground shaking across the region, damaging buildings, triggering landslides and disrupting critical infrastructure.Death Toll Rises as Rescue Operations Intensify .Authorities reported at least 47 fatalities, with additional people injured in the disaster. Maumere in Sikka Regency emerged as one of the worst-affected areas, where deaths were reported following the collapse of buildings.Rescue and relief operations have been severely complicated by landslides, blocked roads, damaged infrastructure and disrupted communications, leaving emergency teams struggling to reach some affected communities.More Than 230 Aftershocks Recorded .The 7.7-magnitude mainshock was followed by more than 230 aftershocks, underscoring the continuing seismic instability across the affected region. One of the subsequent tremors was reported at approximately magnitude 6.1, prompting heightened vigilance among residents and emergency authorities. The succession of powerful earthquakes has intensified concerns over further structural collapses, landslides and possible secondary hazards as rescue teams continue assessing the extent of the destruction.Three Major Earthquakes Within 24 Hours. The Flores catastrophe was not Indonesia’s only significant seismic event during the period. Two additional major earthquakes struck elsewhere in the country within the same 24-hour window, turning an already critical situation into a wider national seismic emergency.Indonesia’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge, makes the archipelago particularly vulnerable to powerful earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunamis.Authorities remain focused on search-and-rescue operations, damage assessment and the evacuation of vulnerable communities as aftershocks continue to rattle parts of the country.Global Attention on Indonesia’s Seismic Crisis .The latest disaster once again highlights Indonesia’s acute exposure to geological hazards and the enormous challenges faced by authorities when multiple seismic events occur in rapid succession. With rescue operations continuing and infrastructure damaged across affected areas, officials are expected to maintain heightened monitoring for further aftershocks and associated hazards.
