Report by Swati

NewDelhi   28 July

Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned until 2:00 PM on Tuesday after the House witnessed repeated disruptions by Opposition members soon after it convened. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill is scheduled to be taken up for discussion when the House reconvenes. The government and Opposition have reportedly agreed to hold an extensive debate on the Bill, with members from all political parties expected to present their views. The discussion is likely to continue until late in the evening before the government responds to the issues raised. The Opposition continued to press the government over the alleged police action against protesting students, demanding explanations for the reported use of lathi-charge, tear gas and pellet guns. Opposition leaders also questioned the arrests of student protesters and sought their immediate release. The government has maintained that the proposed legislation is aimed at taking strict action against those involved in examination malpractices and paper leaks. Under the Bill, offenders could face up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹10 crore, with the objective of deterring organised examination fraud and protecting the integrity of public examinations.Government sources said there is broad political support for stronger anti-paper leak measures, with the legislation intended to ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in recruitment and public examinations across the country.
