Kolkata Law College Under Scrutiny Over Allegations of Misconduct Against Female Students

Kolkata | September 16, 2026

Kolkata law college has come under scrutiny following serious allegations concerning the treatment and safety of female students on campus. The allegations include claims that students were subjected to inappropriate attention, pressure and demands for “compromise”.

The controversy has brought renewed focus on the safety of women students and the functioning of the institution, with questions being raised over whether adequate safeguards and grievance-redressal mechanisms are in place.

The developments come amid continuing tensions at Surendranath Law College, where a separate dispute over the mandatory 75 per cent attendance requirement has triggered protests and an administrative standoff. The college’s vice-principal and teacher-in-charge, Mohammadi Tarannum, had earlier alleged that she was subjected to pressure during a student protest. She later clarified that she had not resigned and intended to continue in office.

The latest allegations relating to female students are serious and require verification through an appropriate institutional or police inquiry. Any claims of sexual harassment, coercion or pressure should be investigated independently, while the identities and privacy of students involved must be protected.

The controversy has also revived concerns about the need for transparent complaint mechanisms, effective campus security and a safe academic environment for students.

Authorities are expected to examine the allegations and determine whether any violations occurred and who, if anyone, may be responsible.

The allegations remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion about individual culpability should be drawn until the relevant authorities establish the facts.
