Artificial intelligence is once again at the centre of a global debate over whether the race to build increasingly powerful AI systems is moving faster than humanity’s ability to control them.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has issued a fresh warning, calling for the pace of development of advanced “frontier” AI models to be slowed so that safety measures and oversight can catch up with rapidly advancing capabilities. Amodei warns of accelerating AI capabilities
In a recent essay, Amodei argued that AI development is advancing at an increasingly rapid rate, partly because AI systems are becoming capable of helping build the next generation of AI. He also pointed to a recent cybersecurity incident involving AI systems as a warning sign. Sam Altman backs a more cautious approach
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also supported the idea of “pacing” frontier AI development, adding to growing calls within the technology industry for stronger safeguards.
The debate has intensified as the United States and China compete for leadership in artificial intelligence. Industry leaders and policymakers face a difficult balancing act: slowing development could reduce safety risks, but moving too slowly could allow strategic rivals to gain an advantage. AI already being misused for cyberattacks and surveillance
The concerns are not limited to hypothetical future scenarios. AI models have increasingly been targeted or misused for activities including cyberattacks, fraud and surveillance.
Anthropic has reported attempts by malicious actors to use its AI systems for harmful activities, while OpenAI has separately reported covert influence operations in which China-linked accounts allegedly used ChatGPT to generate content for campaigns targeting debates around AI policy in the United States. These developments have raised concerns that increasingly capable AI could become a powerful tool not only for economic growth and scientific research, but also for cybercrime, misinformation, surveillance and other forms of malicious activity.
A warning for the global AI race
Experts remain divided over the likelihood and timeline of an AI catastrophe, and there is no scientific consensus that advanced AI will inevitably threaten human existence. However, the growing number of warnings from researchers and technology leaders has turned AI safety into a major global policy issue.
The central question is no longer simply how powerful AI can become, but whether humanity can develop effective safeguards quickly enough to keep pace.
As the US-China AI race accelerates, the world faces a critical choice: pursue maximum technological speed or build stronger safety mechanisms alongside the technology.
For Amodei and other AI leaders, the message is increasingly clear—AI development should not outrun humanity’s ability to control it.
