Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has called off his hunger strike following a meeting with BJP National President JP Nadda, describing the government’s initiative as a “commendable step” taken after an extensive discussion.In a statement after the meeting, Wangchuk said the decision was made while keeping in mind the possibility of unrest in the country. He appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and ensure that no violence occurs from any side.“This is a commendable step. It has been taken after a long discussion and with concern over the possibility of violence in the country. I appeal to everyone to remain extremely cautious and ensure that no violence takes place from any side,” Wangchuk said.Following the meeting, Wangchuk officially ended his indefinite hunger strike.Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his wishes for Wangchuk’s recovery in a social media post, urging him to follow medical advice after ending the fast.“I request Sonam ji to follow the doctors’ advice regarding his daily routine after ending the fast and pray that he regains his previous weight at the earliest. I pray to God for his good health and speedy recovery,” the Prime Minister said.The development marks a significant breakthrough after days of protest and is being viewed as an important step toward dialogue and maintaining peace. Attention will now shift to the implementation of the assurances discussed during the meeting and the government’s response to the issues raised by Wangchuk.
