He added that the project would place India among a select group of countries developing hydrogen-based rail transport.
A Major Push for Green Mobility
The hydrogen train operates using fuel-cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity while emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. Officials said the technology offers a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains and can play a crucial role in reducing pollution across the railway network.
Indian Railways has been working on multiple green initiatives, including electrification of railway lines, solar power projects, and energy-efficient locomotives. The hydrogen train project is expected to further strengthen the country’s transition toward environmentally friendly public transport.
Strategic Importance
Railway officials said the successful deployment of the hydrogen train could pave the way for additional hydrogen-powered services in other parts of the country. The project is also expected to boost domestic research, manufacturing, and investment in the hydrogen energy sector.
The train flagged off from Jind will initially operate on a designated route for testing and demonstration purposes before wider deployment is considered.
