A sudden and massive flash flood struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, August 26, unleashing widespread destruction along the Nepal-Tibet border and prompting neighbouring Bihar in India to move to high alert.
The terrifying surge, reportedly linked to suspected glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) or avalanche activity in the Tibet-China border region, rapidly pushed water through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, devastating settlements and critical infrastructure.
Nepal Devastated by Flash Floods
At least eight deaths have been officially confirmed, while more than 20 people are reportedly missing in Nepal, including personnel of the Armed Police Force. Authorities in Tibet have also reported casualties and missing persons following the disaster.
The Rasuwa district settlements of Timure and Syabrubesi are among the worst-hit areas, with homes and infrastructure badly damaged by the powerful torrent.
Several bridges have been washed away, including major concrete structures, while sections of the Pasang Lhamu Highway have been destroyed. Massive mudslides have also blocked key routes, leaving affected areas cut off from road connectivity.
Hydropower Infrastructure Severely Hit
The disaster has also caused a major blow to Nepal’s power infrastructure. Six hydropower facilities have reportedly been severely affected, resulting in the loss of around 430 MW of electricity generation and disrupting a significant portion of the country’s power supply.
Rescue Operations Intensified
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened an emergency disaster-response meeting as rescue and relief operations were intensified.
The Nepal Army, police and private helicopters have been deployed to reach stranded people. However, heavy rainfall, poor visibility and dangerously high water levels are making aerial rescue operations extremely difficult.
Bihar Moves to High Alert
The downstream threat has raised serious concerns in Bihar, where authorities are closely monitoring rivers connected to the Nepal flood system amid an already intense monsoon.
Officials are particularly concerned about a possible sudden surge entering the Gandak river system and affecting vulnerable areas along the India-Nepal border.
Three-Metre Flood Wave Warning
Disaster-management authorities have warned of the possibility of a flash-flood wave of up to three metres entering the Gandak system, potentially causing rapid inundation in low-lying areas.
The Valmikinagar Barrage in West Champaran has been placed under heightened surveillance, with officials closely monitoring water levels, discharge and structural safety.
Six Bihar Districts Under Vigilance
High-alert and precautionary measures have been activated across several vulnerable districts, including:
- West Champaran
- East Champaran
- Gopalganj
- Muzaffarpur
- Saran
- Vaishali
NDRF and SDRF teams are being mobilised, while residents living in low-lying areas near rivers and vulnerable embankments are being advised to remain alert and move towards safer, higher ground if required.
Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary held high-level review meetings to assess the evolving situation and coordinate preparedness measures.
A Himalayan Disaster With Cross-Border Consequences
The unfolding disaster has once again highlighted the extreme vulnerability of the Himalayan region to sudden floods, landslides, avalanches and glacial hazards.
With rivers originating in the Himalayan and Tibetan regions flowing into the Indian plains, a disaster upstream can quickly become a serious cross-border emergency.
Nepal is facing the fury of nature as a powerful wall of water tears through Himalayan valleys, while Bihar remains on high alert against the possibility of a sudden downstream flood surge.
