At least eight people have died and 384 travellers have been reported missing, including 105 Indian tourists, after a catastrophic flash flood struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
The disaster was reportedly triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche on the Tibetan side of the border, sending a sudden surge of water down the Bhote Koshi River at around 9 a.m. local time.
Border Settlements Turned Into Ruins
The enormous wall of water swept through mountain settlements, destroying homes, bridges and roads and leaving large areas buried under mud and debris.
Rasuwa district, particularly Syabrubesi and Timure, has suffered some of the worst destruction. Parts of Dhading and Nuwakot districts have also been badly affected.
384 Travellers Missing
The Nepal Tourism Board has released a preliminary list of 384 people reported unaccounted for.
The list includes:
- 93 Nepalese citizens
- 291 foreign nationals
- 105 Indian tourists
- 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
- Travellers from the US, UK, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa and the Netherlands
Authorities have stressed that the list remains preliminary, as communication networks have been severely disrupted and officials are still cross-checking information with travel agencies and local authorities.
Bridges Swept Away, Hydropower Projects Hit
The raging Bhote Koshi has damaged major roads and swept away bridges, cutting off access to several affected areas.
At least a dozen hydropower projects have reportedly suffered serious damage. Nepal’s Energy Ministry said approximately 430 MW of hydropower capacity — more than 12% of the country’s total capacity — has been knocked offline.
Major Casualties Reported on Tibet Side
The disaster has also had consequences across the border in Tibet.Chinese state media has reported major casualties and missing people after a mudslide struck a key land crossing in Gyirong County, further highlighting the scale of the Himalayan disaster.
Rescue Operations Underway.The Nepal government has mobilised the Nepal Army, police and specialised rescue teams to search for survivors and missing travellers.
However, extremely high water levels, unstable terrain and severe weather initially prevented rescue helicopters from landing in some of the worst-hit areas.
Given the scale of the emergency, Nepal has sought rescue and relief assistance from India and China.
