Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand: The sacred ‘Om’ formation on Uttarakhand’s Om Parvat in the Vyas Valley has once again become faint as snow cover continues to decline at the high-altitude site, raising concern among pilgrims, locals and environmental observers.

Located at an altitude of around 14,000 feet, Om Parvat is known for the naturally formed snow pattern resembling the Hindu sacred symbol ‘Om’. The distinctive formation has long been a major attraction for pilgrims and visitors travelling towards the Adi Kailash region.

Why Is the Snow Formation Fading?

Several factors are being cited for the recurring reduction in snow cover in the upper Himalayan region:

  • Rising temperatures: The Himalayan region is experiencing significant warming, contributing to changes in snowfall patterns and the retreat of long-term snow and ice cover.

The fading of the natural ‘Om’ formation has disappointed many pilgrims and visitors who travel to the region specifically to witness the sacred symbol. Continued changes could also affect tourism-dependent economic activity in surrounding areas.

A Warning for the Himalayan Ecosystem

The changing snow cover at Om Parvat is also being viewed as part of a wider environmental concern. Shrinking snow and ice reserves in the Himalayas can have implications for water availability, mountain ecosystems and climate resilience.
