11 Dead, Several Missing as Flash Floods Devastate Poonch-Rajouri; Amarnath Yatra Suspended

Report by Swati  20 July 2026

Jammu: Widespread devastation struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides, leaving at least 11 people dead and several others missing. Rescue teams have been deployed across the worst-hit areas as authorities race to locate the missing and provide relief to affected families. The worst damage was reported from Surankote in Poonch district, where homes were swept away and roads were severely damaged. Continuous rainfall has hampered rescue operations, while officials fear the death toll could rise as search efforts continue. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to review the situation and assured all possible assistance from the Centre. The Chief Minister also cut short his visit to monitor relief and rescue operations on the ground. As a precautionary measure, authorities have temporarily suspended the Amarnath Yatra due to the extreme weather conditions and heightened risk of further landslides and flash floods. Pilgrims have been advised to follow official updates before resuming their journey.
