Kedarnath Yatra Halted After Landslide Near Chirbasa Amid Heavy Rain Alert

Uttarakhand | September 15, 2026
Report by Swati

The Kedarnath pilgrimage was temporarily halted on Monday after a landslide and continuous rockfall disrupted the trekking route near Chirbasa in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district.

The disruption occurred near the Chirbasa helipad, where debris and falling rocks reportedly blocked the pedestrian route leading towards Kedarnath. In view of the potential danger to pilgrims, authorities stopped the movement of devotees along the affected stretch.

Pilgrims were asked to remain at Gaurikund and Sonprayag as a precautionary measure while the situation on the route was assessed. The sudden disruption caused considerable inconvenience to devotees who had arrived to undertake the Kedarnath pilgrimage during the festive period of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The incident comes amid adverse weather conditions in several parts of the country, with heavy rainfall and strong winds posing additional challenges in hilly regions.

The administration is closely monitoring the situation and the pilgrimage route will be reopened only after the affected stretch is considered safe for movement.

The latest developments have once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Kedarnath route to landslides and rockfall during periods of intense rainfall. Pilgrims have been advised to follow official instructions and avoid attempting to cross blocked or dangerous stretches of the route.
