At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker crashed and exploded on the Sanandaj-Hamadan highway in western Iran, Iranian state media reported.
The incident occurred late Saturday night after the tanker reportedly suffered a technical failure in its braking system. The vehicle struck several other cars before bursting into flames near a traffic police checkpoint close to Sanandaj, a Kurdish city located about 400 kilometres west of Tehran.
The massive explosion triggered a major fire, prompting firefighters and emergency services to rush to the scene. The blaze was brought under control, while all seven injured people were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety in Iran, where traffic accidents remain a major cause of fatalities.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and explosion.
