A major tragedy unfolded in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand after a sudden surge of water and debris entered an under-construction tunnel in the Mayapur–Pipalkoti area, trapping workers inside and triggering a large-scale emergency rescue operation.According to the latest reports, seven workers have lost their lives, while several others were rescued from the hazardous tunnel. Reports indicate that some workers remain unaccounted for, and rescue teams are continuing an intensive search operation amid extremely difficult conditions.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
The incident occurred after heavy rainfall and a landslide caused water and debris to rush into the construction site. The sudden inflow created a highly dangerous situation inside the tunnel, making access and evacuation extremely challenging.Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), fire and emergency teams, Army personnel and other rescue agencies have been mobilised. Teams are working continuously to remove debris, drain accumulated water and reach workers who may still be trapped.Earlier, officials reported that 16 workers had been rescued, while the number of people initially trapped inside the tunnel was reported at around 22.
Injured Workers Shifted for Treatment
The rescued workers have been taken for medical treatment. Those suffering serious injuries are being assessed, while arrangements are being considered for shifting critically injured workers to higher medical centres, including through helicopter evacuation if required.
Officials have maintained that the immediate priority is to save lives, locate missing workers and provide emergency medical assistance.
Questions Over Construction-Site Safety
The tragedy has also raised serious questions about safety arrangements at construction sites in the fragile Himalayan region. The incident occurred while construction activity was underway, with sudden water and debris entering the tunnel following the landslide.
The key questions now confronting authorities include whether adequate precautions were in place, whether the weather and geological risks had been sufficiently assessed, and whether workers had adequate emergency escape and evacuation arrangements.

With lives still potentially at risk, the rescue operation has become a race against time. Rescue personnel are working in difficult conditions involving water, loose debris and unstable terrain.
The focus remains firmly on bringing every possible survivor out safely.
