The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has called an urgent meeting of senior officials from the Home and Civil Aviation ministries and other stakeholders following a serious immigration lapse at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The meeting has been scheduled for 7 pm on Tuesday at Kartavya Bhawan, the MHA headquarters, with Home Secretary Govind Mohan expected to chair the discussions, the report said.
The development follows an incident in which three Italian passengers travelled from Amritsar to Delhi and subsequently boarded a Lufthansa flight to Munich without completing the mandatory immigration process at Delhi Airport.
MHA to Examine Security and Immigration Procedures
The meeting is expected to focus on how the passengers were able to move from a domestic arrival to an international departure without undergoing the required immigration formalities.
Senior officials are likely to examine the existing procedures for domestic-to-international transfers, coordination among airlines, airport authorities and immigration officials, and possible gaps that may have contributed to the incident.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has already sought an explanation from Air India over the lapse.
New Instructions May Follow
The MHA meeting is also expected to consider corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Officials may review passenger movement protocols and strengthen coordination between immigration authorities, airlines, airport operators and security agencies.
The incident has raised concerns over the effectiveness of immigration checks at one of the country’s busiest international airports. The authorities are now expected to issue fresh directions or strengthen existing procedures to ensure that passengers travelling onward on international flights cannot bypass mandatory immigration clearance.
The outcome of the meeting could lead to additional safeguards for domestic-to-international passenger transfers at major Indian airports.
