Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against fugitive gangster Shariq Sata, whom the Uttar Pradesh Police have identified as the alleged mastermind behind the November 2024 Sambhal violence.
The development marks a significant escalation in the authorities’ efforts to trace, apprehend and extradite Sata, who is wanted in the Sambhal violence case as well as dozens of other criminal cases.
A senior police officer said the Red Corner Notice was issued following a request routed through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the completion of the required legal formalities.
According to police, Sata had already been declared a fugitive offender by a court, while proceedings for attachment of his property had been initiated. A Lookout Circular (LOC) had also previously been issued against him.
Police Identify Sata as Key Conspirator .Krishna Kumar Bishnoi, who was Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, at the time of the violence and is currently serving as SP Bijnor, said Sata was the main conspirator in the case.Police claim that Sata left India several years ago and has remained absconding. Investigators allege that he travelled to Dubai using a forged passport and that members of his family had frequently travelled there. The police subsequently prepared a detailed dossier containing information about the accused and forwarded it to the CBI. The agency then coordinated with Interpol for the issuance of the Red Corner Notice.Wanted in 55–60 Criminal Cases .Authorities said Sata is wanted in approximately 55 to 60 criminal cases, apart from the Sambhal violence case. Police teams had conducted multiple raids and searches to locate him but were unsuccessful. After failing to trace him, authorities pasted a notice under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at his residence as part of the legal proceedings against the absconding accused. With the Interpol notice now in place, Indian authorities are expected to intensify efforts to establish Sata’s whereabouts and pursue his arrest and extradition through the applicable legal process.Red Corner Notice Strengthens International Search .The Red Corner Notice effectively alerts law-enforcement agencies in Interpol member countries that an individual is wanted by Indian authorities for prosecution. It can assist in locating and seeking the provisional arrest of a wanted person, subject to the laws of the country where the person is found.Police said the latest development could pave the way for further action to bring Sata back to India and make him face the criminal cases pending against him.The November 2024 Sambhal violence had erupted during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, leading to deaths, injuries and widespread tension in the district.
