Raksha Bandhan 2026: An Unbreakable Bond of Affection, Trust and Duty

Report by Swati

SRINAGAR GARHWAL 20 August 2026
Raksha Bandhan is not merely a festival of tying a sacred thread; it is a profound expression of affection, trust, responsibility and the eternal bond between siblings. Celebrated on the full moon of Shravan, the festival holds a special place in India’s Sanatan cultural tradition.According to Dr. Akhilesh Chandra Chamola, astrologer and devotee of Maa Kali, Raksha Bandhan carries a deeper spiritual significance, reminding society that genuine protection is rooted in love, duty, compassion and unwavering commitment. The traditional mantra recited while tying the sacred raksha sutra is:“Yens Baddho Bali Raja Danavendro Mahabalah,Tena Tvamapi Badhnami Rakshe Ma Chala Ma Chala.”The mantra invokes the sacred power of the protective thread and symbolises an enduring commitment to fulfil one’s responsibilities without deviation.Dr. Chamola said the festival should be understood not merely as a family ritual but as a celebration of dharma, dignity, mutual respect and selfless service. He emphasised that its message extends beyond biological relationships and carries relevance for society as a whole.Raksha Bandhan’s rich mythological and historical traditions include narratives associated with Lord Krishna and Draupadi, Indrani and Lord Indra, as well as the popular historical account of Rani Karnavati and Humayun. These traditions collectively highlight the values of protection, loyalty, sacrifice and solidarity. From a spiritual perspective, the festival also provides an opportunity for families to undertake prayers and seek divine blessings for the health, prosperity and well-being of loved ones.Dr. Chamola further observed that the modern interpretation of Raksha Bandhan has expanded to encompass women’s dignity, social harmony, environmental protection and gratitude towards those who safeguard society and the nation.“Raksha Bandhan reminds us that the true meaning of protection lies not in words alone, but in fulfilling one’s duty with sincerity, compassion and courage,” Dr. Chamola said. The festival, he added, should inspire people to strengthen family bonds while extending the spirit of protection and compassion towards society and nature.
