In a major administrative development, the Uttarakhand government has granted administrative approval for relocating the Uttarakhand High Court from Nainital to Haldwani’s Lamachaur area.The proposed High Court complex will be developed on 30 hectares of forest land in Lamachaur Block, under the Bhakra Range of the Terai East Forest Division, Rudrapur. 30 Hectares to Be Used for High Court Complex According to the government order, the selected land is part of a larger 73-hectare forest area situated along National Highway-05 between Haldwani and Rudrapur, near the Bel Baba Temple.The proposed site falls under Plot Nos. 46 and 47. The state government has now revised its earlier plan for establishing the High Court at Gaulapar.
Gaulapar Plan Revised
On June 6, 2023, the government had granted in-principle and administrative approval for establishing the High Court on 26.08 hectares of land in Gaulapar.That proposal has now been modified, with Lamachaur selected as the new location and 30 hectares earmarked for the proposed judicial complex.DM, Registrar General Reports ConsideredThe decision was taken after considering the Registrar General of the Uttarakhand High Court’s letter dated July 2, 2026, and the Nainital District Magistrate’s site inspection report dated May 14, 2026.The Lamachaur site was reportedly found suitable for construction of the High Court complex.Principal Secretary, Justice and Legal Advisor Amit Kumar Sirohi has directed the Public Works Department Secretary, serving as the nodal officer, to complete the necessary procedural formalities at the earliest.Existing Nainital High Court Campus May Get Alternative Use .Following the relocation, the existing High Court premises in Nainital are likely to be put to alternative use. The government is yet to announce the final plan for utilisation of the existing campus.The decision is expected to pave the way for a large, modern judicial complex in Haldwani, potentially transforming the city into a major judicial and administrative hub in Uttarakhand.
