Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Ganpati has suspended nine police personnel and sought explanations from four others after a surprise late-night inspection exposed serious lapses in police checking operations following a reported firing incident in the Pantnagar area.
According to police, the control room received information on Wednesday night that occupants of a Scorpio SUV had allegedly opened fire in the Pantnagar area before fleeing towards Kashipur. Following the alert, instructions were issued to establish checking points from Pantnagar to the Jaspur border to intercept the suspects.
To assess the police response, SSP Ajay Ganpati personally conducted an unannounced inspection between midnight and 3 a.m., travelling in a private vehicle from Rudrapur to Jaspur. Since he was not using an official vehicle, personnel on duty were unaware of the inspection.
During the inspection, the SSP reportedly found several serious irregularities. Night officers were absent from designated checking points, including the Mahatosh Mor area. Some personnel were also found to have provided incorrect location updates to the police control room, allegedly misleading officials about their deployment.
Taking immediate disciplinary action, the SSP suspended nine police personnel. Those suspended include SI Harish Mahar and Constable Kamal Singh of Kelakhera Police Station; SI Dhirendra Parihar and Constables Shailendra Singh and Puran Chandra of Bajpur Police Station; and SI Sushil Kumar, Head Constable Siraj Hussain, and Constables Dharmendra Bharti and Mohan Giri of ITI Police Station.
In addition to the suspensions, explanations have been sought from four other police personnel regarding their conduct during the operation.
The action underscores the district police’s emphasis on accountability and operational readiness, particularly during emergency response situations and night-time policing.
