New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s opposition to a planned appearance by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at Madison Square Garden has triggered a fresh political controversy among sections of the Indian-American community.Mamdani said he does not support the August 29 event, while acknowledging that the city may not have jurisdiction to cancel a privately organised gathering. Mamdani’s remarks have drawn criticism from voices who argue that opposing a cultural and religious gathering risks alienating Hindu-Americans. Critics have also questioned whether the mayor’s position reflects the growing political importance of different sections of New York’s diverse electorate.The RSS, meanwhile, has defended the event, describing it as an opportunity for open dialogue and mutual respect and inviting those interested in understanding the organisation to participate.
