Amaravati

El Niño Crisis Naidu Orders State Machinery to Contain Price Rise and Protect Economic Growth . Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed the state administration to take immediate and coordinated measures to prevent any additional burden on consumers amid the emerging economic and agricultural challenges associated with the El Niño phenomenon.Chairing a review meeting at the Camp Office in Amaravati, Naidu instructed officials to formulate a comprehensive contingency strategy covering water availability, agricultural productivity and the potential impact of deficient rainfall on the state’s economy. The Chief Minister called for the constitution of a dedicated committee to assess the situation and stressed the need for effective coordination among departments to ensure that the public does not bear the brunt of any potential price escalation.Naidu also directed the Planning Department to devise strategies to ensure that Andhra Pradesh continues to meet its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) targets despite climate-related disruptions. Officials were asked to closely monitor economic indicators and identify gaps requiring corrective intervention. The Chief Minister further emphasised the importance of securing adequate water supplies. He noted that inadequate inflows into the Krishna River had affected major reservoirs and irrigation projects, including Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, which had not yet reached their full reservoir levels. He said floodwaters diverted from the Godavari to the Krishna Delta had strengthened water availability, but groundwater levels were showing signs of decline. Departments were therefore instructed to adopt coordinated measures to prevent any deterioration in economic output.Naidu also directed officials to undertake a comprehensive assessment of exports and take corrective action wherever weaknesses are identified. He set a target of achieving 15 per cent growth in exports, while emphasising the need to ensure that external market conditions do not adversely affect Andhra Pradesh’s economic performance.According to the July 2026 monthly economic report presented at the meeting, Andhra Pradesh recorded 10.7 per cent economic growth during the second quarter of 2025-26, despite the impact of El Niño conditions. The state’s growth rate remained above the national growth rate recorded during the preceding two years. The report also highlighted robust sectoral performance. Agriculture registered 13.5 per cent growth, while the industrial and services sectors expanded by 10.6 per cent and 9.9 per cent, respectively. The animal husbandry sector also posted significant gains, with meat production increasing by 9.6 per cent and egg production by 5.1 per cent. General exports grew by 10.5 per cent, reaching approximately Rs 16,322 crore, while STPI exports surged by 32.2 per cent.Commercial vehicle registrations recorded a notable 51.6 per cent increase, reflecting stronger economic activity. Technology-led governance measures also contributed to a 21 per cent rise in GST collections, which reached approximately Rs 13,282 crore.Investment activity remained encouraging, with mega projects involving investments of nearly Rs 2.88 lakh crore registering 75.4 per cent growth. MSME investments of around Rs 60,000 crore grew by 73.6 per cent. The Chief Minister directed every government department to pursue measurable performance targets and ensure that development plans translate into tangible outcomes. He called for greater technological integration across departments, drawing attention to the need for stronger efficiency and accountability.Naidu also underlined the coalition government’s commitment to fiscal discipline while simultaneously implementing welfare programmes aimed at improving the lives of citizens. The state government’s immediate challenge, however, remains balancing economic expansion with climate-related risks, particularly the pressure that erratic rainfall, water shortages and agricultural disruptions could exert on prices and household budgets.
