Saudi Arabia has temporarily shut down its strategically important East-West oil pipeline following a drone attack that caused damage to oil infrastructure and raised fresh concerns over the security of global energy supplies.
The 1,200-kilometre pipeline is a critical alternative route for transporting Saudi crude to the Red Sea, allowing the kingdom to bypass the increasingly volatile Strait of Hormuz. The pipeline has been carrying around 4–5 million barrels of oil per day, making it a vital component of Saudi Arabia’s export network. Satellite Images Show Smoke Near Pipeline Route
Satellite imagery has provided a striking visual indication of the damage. Images captured near Medina showed thick black smoke rising from an area along the East-West pipeline route. The imagery was released as reports emerged of drone attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure.
Saudi authorities have said the latest drone attack originated from Iraq, while the region is simultaneously witnessing a sharp escalation involving Iran-linked groups and Yemen’s Houthi forces. The Houthis have also claimed separate missile and drone attacks against Saudi targets.
Major Blow to Saudi Arabia’s Oil Export Network
The temporary shutdown of the East-West pipeline comes at a particularly sensitive time for global energy markets. The route has become increasingly important as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces severe disruption.
The latest attack has intensified fears that further damage to Saudi energy infrastructure could tighten global crude supplies and push oil prices higher. Brent crude has already remained above the $100-per-barrel level amid the escalating regional conflict. The developments also come days after a series of attacks on Saudi energy facilities that reportedly injured dozens of people and temporarily disrupted operations at several sites.
