Jharkhand Students Intensify Protest, Hunger Strike Enters Fourth Day; Government Urged to Hold Talks

Report By Swati

RANCHI  Aug. 7

A student-led protest in Jharkhand has intensified as several aspirants continued their agitation over alleged delays in recruitment examinations and government hiring. The movement, which has drawn widespread attention, entered a critical phase after some protesters launched an indefinite hunger strike, with at least one participant completing four days without food.According to protesters, the agitation is aimed at pressing the state government to address long-pending issues related to recruitment and examinations. The students have demanded the implementation of a transparent and accountable examination system for recruitment bodies, including JPSC and JSSC, timely release of scholarships, a fixed examination calendar, reforms in the school education system, and implementation of a local employment policy. One of the hunger strikers, identified as Savita, 28, said she was forced to resort to the indefinite fast because repeated protests and appeals had failed to yield any concrete response. She alleged that recruitment delays dating back to 2019 have left thousands of aspirants uncertain about their future.“We have no desire to put our health at risk, but we have been left with no other option. We only want the government to listen to the concerns of students and unemployed youth,” she said during the protest.Visuals from the protest site showed students camping under temporary shelters while volunteers and supporters continued to assist those participating in the agitation. Some hunger strikers reportedly required medical attention after their health deteriorated during the protest. The demonstration has gained significant public and media attention, with protesters describing the movement as a fight for the future of Jharkhand’s youth. They have urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s government to initiate direct dialogue and announce concrete measures to resolve their grievances. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding a resolution of the protest. Students have maintained that the agitation, including the hunger strike, will continue until their demands are addressed.
