The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across 18 states between July 28 and August 2. The warning comes as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify weather activity across large parts of the country over the next several hours.
According to the IMD, the changing weather system is likely to affect Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Kerala. Wind speeds of 50–85 km/h are expected in some areas, while hilly regions face an increased risk of landslides and flash floods.
Heavy Rain Forecast for North and Central India
The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand from July 27 to August 2. Uttarakhand is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall between July 27 and July 29.
In the plains, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh are expected to receive widespread showers from July 28 to July 31, with heavy rainfall warnings in effect for July 28 and 29.
Meanwhile, eastern and western Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness very heavy rainfall on July 28 and 29. In Rajasthan, heavy rain is forecast for eastern districts on July 28–29, while western Rajasthan may experience significant rainfall between July 30 and August 2.
The IMD has also forecast a spell of heavy rain across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region beginning July 27, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds through July 29.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
The deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to generate winds of 50–60 km/h, with gusts reaching 70 km/h until the morning of July 28. Sea conditions are expected to remain very rough, prompting the IMD to advise fishermen not to venture into the sea along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal and northern Andhra Pradesh until conditions improve.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, follow official weather advisories and take necessary precautions against heavy rainfall, flooding and storm-related hazards.
