Governor releases book celebrating Uttarakhand’s traditional cuisine

Dehradun, Feb 9: 2026(RNS)

Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd) on Monday released Flavour of Devbhoomi, a book highlighting the state’s traditional cuisine, culture and lifestyle, at Lok Bhawan.
Published by the Indian Federation of Culinary Associations, the book has been authored with contributions from chefs Dr Neeraj Agrawal, Yogendra Singh Negi, Deepa Chawla and Gopal Singh. It documents traditional recipes of Uttarakhand while also detailing their nutritional and health benefits.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the publication was a significant effort towards preserving and promoting the state’s ancient culinary heritage. He underlined the importance of traditional grains and spices such as mandua (finger millet), jhangora (barnyard millet) and jakhya, describing them as highly beneficial for health.
Singh noted that Uttarakhand’s traditional foods are not only rich in flavour but also possess medicinal properties, leading to a growing demand in recent years. He added that with people increasingly shifting towards organic products, the state has the potential to emerge as a key contributor in this sector.
The Governor also praised the role of women in the hill regions, stating that they have safeguarded and passed on these culinary traditions from one generation to the next. He congratulated the authors and their team for their contribution towards documenting and promoting Uttarakhand’s rich food heritage
