The BRICS Summit in New Delhi delivered a significant diplomatic outcome on Saturday as leaders of the expanded grouping adopted the New Delhi Declaration by consensus, reaffirming their commitment to greater cooperation, multilateralism and a stronger voice for the Global South.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the summit at Bharat Mandapam, stressed that the commitments made by BRICS countries must be translated into concrete and tangible outcomes.
Modi underlined the need to transform BRICS decisions and commitments into practical results, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, technology, sustainable development and institutional reforms.
The adoption of the declaration is being viewed as an important diplomatic achievement for India, which is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit amid complex geopolitical tensions and differences among member states. Intensive negotiations preceded the consensus on the joint declaration.
The declaration reflects the bloc’s concerns over unilateral tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers, while reiterating the importance of a fair, open and rules-based international trading system.
The summit has also placed strong emphasis on reforming global governance institutions and enhancing the representation of developing and emerging economies in international decision-making.
With BRICS now representing nearly half of the world’s population and a substantial share of the global economy, the New Delhi Summit is being closely watched for its implications for the evolving global order.
