Syrian court has sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his younger brother Maher al-Assad to death, according to the report. The court announced the verdict on Tuesday in connection with alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Syria’s 14-year-long conflict, in which nearly half a million people are estimated to have been killed.Neither Bashar al-Assad nor Maher al-Assad was present in court when the sentence was announced. Following the change of power in Syria, Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, where he has reportedly been living in exile. The verdict marks a major development in the long-running legal proceedings related to the alleged atrocities committed during the Syrian conflict.
